Tragedy struck in the Ipara area of Remo, Ogun State, on Monday when a high-speed car race reportedly organised by suspected internet fraudsters ended in a fatal crash, killing five people, including three of the racers and two residents.
According to community sources, the suspected Yahoo boys had staged a contest with a ₦30,000 prize for the winner. During the race, one of the drivers lost control of an unregistered Lexus vehicle around the Owolowo area and rammed into a roadside shop, killing two bystanders instantly. The driver and two other occupants of the car sustained serious injuries and were taken to separate hospitals.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident, stating that the driver, identified only as male, died at the scene along with the two residents — Akeem Ashiru and Shina Badejo. The two other occupants later died at hospitals in Isara and Sagamu, where they had been taken for treatment.
Multiple videos shared on social media showed the wrecked shop, trapped victims, and the scene of the crash, with bystanders expressing shock and grief.
The accident occurred around 1:40 p.m. while the Lexus was travelling towards Fidiwo at high speed. Authorities have urged motorists to avoid reckless driving and overspeeding, warning that such contests are both illegal and dangerous.
