Flooding: Wurukum Traders appeal to Gov over N2bn properties loss
Gov. AliaTraders market Association in Wurukum, Makurdi, Benue State, has called for quick review of 2012 flooding that invaded the market.
The association chairman, Mallam Terngu Ibrahim Adura made passionate plea to Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State through his adviser on market overseer in a chat with Royal News on Wednesday in Makurdi.
According to Mallam Adura, since the incident happened, none of his members were compensated nor offered palliatives to cushion the hardship they suffered in the damage caused by the flood.
The chairman recalled that in 2012 “we recorded heavy downpour that destroyed supermarkets, and every other items in the market was submerged in the water during the period.
Mr. Adura said the cost of damage was estimated at over two billion naira, as every facilities were lost in the flood, stressing that no one has ever compensated the victims till now.
He added that even though the flood occurred long ago, the impact was still glaring as some of the members are yet to recover from the loss, emphasising and pleading that the current administration need to look into the situation.
Commenting on constant flooding, he disclosed that sometimes officials of ecological funds do visit, and they take them round. Although there was no problem with subsequent excavated water channels caused by flooding to the river, but it would have resulted in blockage, if not for the intervention of relevant stakeholders who reopened it again.
Responding to question on why efforts by previous administration to relocate the market was thwarted, he said they preferred to remained at present location.
