The All Progressives Congress (APC) has revealed that at least four incumbent governors from opposition parties are in advanced discussions to defect to the ruling party before the end of 2025.
This was disclosed by Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, the APC National Vice Chairman (South-East), in an interview where he said the move forms part of the party’s strategy to consolidate its political dominance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Arodiogbu identified the governors of Plateau, Taraba, Rivers, and Abia States as those being courted by the party, adding that negotiations were already at an advanced stage.
“It is a possibility that the Plateau governor will join us, likewise his Taraba counterpart. We are also looking forward to receiving Rivers Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State in our midst,” he said.
According to him, the defections could happen within weeks, possibly before the party’s upcoming congresses.
“These are all high possibilities. We expect that to happen in the coming weeks before our congresses. Most of these defections are expected before the end of this year. Once they happen, it will further confirm that the APC remains the dominant and most organised political platform in Nigeria,” Arodiogbu added.
The APC chieftain attributed the party’s expanding influence to its reform-driven policies and inclusive approach, which, he said, continue to attract prominent political figures nationwide.
“The APC has grown into a home for all progressives. Our growth isn’t just in numbers but also in the quality of leadership. Many governors and political figures now recognise that this party offers stability and direction for Nigeria’s democracy,” he stated.
He further explained that the APC National Chairman has maintained an open-door policy, welcoming politicians willing to align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The national chairman has emphasised that the APC remains open to all. We are welcoming individuals of goodwill who support President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Arodiogbu said.
He expressed confidence that the anticipated defections would strengthen the APC ahead of the 2025 congresses and boost its prospects in the 2027 polls.
