Get vaccinated to stay safe, Sultan tells Nigerians

The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Sa’ad Abubakar III has said the lack of trust in the Federal Government by citizens is responsible for Covid-19 vaccination heaistancy in Nigeria.

He stated this in Abuja, at the 2021 4th quarter review meeting of the Northern Traditional Leaders Committee on Primary Health Care Delivery (NTLC), saying that the FG needs to build the confidence the Nigerian citizens repose in the nation.

According to him, adequate education of stakeholders, especially traditional leaders is paramount if the country must kick Covid-19, and reiterated that traditional leaders in the north were ready to support the federal government achieve her goal in defeating the pandemic and other diseases due to their ability to offer relevant pieces of advice that benefits lots of their followers.

He urged Nigerians to disregard conspiracy theorists and concocted myths around the safety of COVID-19 vaccine and get vaccinated to stay safe.

The Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib, while commending the traditional leaders, said the NTLC, was established 15 years ago and had played a crucial role in the fight against polio, meningitis in the region.

Shuaib noted that since the spread of COVID-19, the Federal Government has engaged the NTLC to assist in its efforts to tackle the pandemic in their region aimed at mass vaccination, and the exercise since it rolled out by the government was yielding results as more Nigerians are being vaccinated.

For his part, the Chairman of NTLC and Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mera pledged the unwavering support of Traditional and Religious leaders for all PHC programmes especially COVID-19 vaccination and polio eradication.

The 4th quarter review meeting resolved to set up mass vaccination sites in palaces to enhance commmunity confidence in the vaccines and increase uptake.

The engagement provides a unique opportunity to interact with traditional leaders on their role and responsibility towards increasing the uptake of COVID-19 vaccination and improving PHC delivery. There are also discussions around the current COVID-19 Mass Vaccination Campaign, Polio Outbreak Response and Non-Polio SIAs.

With the new detection of the omicron variants in the country and the rise in COVID-19 cases, the need for more inclusion of all opinion leaders has now become more necessary than before.
