Gombe Orders School Closure Over Security Fears

Date:

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has directed all schools in the state to shut down on or before Friday due to rising security concerns.

The directive was announced on Monday by the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Esrom Toro, during a meeting with Local Education Secretaries in Gombe.

The move follows heightened security alerts across northern Nigeria after a series of attacks and student abductions in recent weeks.

According to Toro, the governor issued the order as a precaution to protect students, teachers and school administrators amid growing threats.

“His Excellency, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has directed that all schools should be closed on or before Friday, 28th November 2025. This is purely a cautionary measure to safeguard lives,” he said.

Toro stressed that the closure should not cause panic, describing it as a proactive step aimed at preventing any security breach.

He assured parents that the government is working to curb insecurity and keep children safe.

Toro also instructed schools to conclude all ongoing examinations before the shutdown.

“Examinations should be conducted between today and Friday. Schools must complete all pending assessments before closure,” he added.

He further disclosed that the Taskforce Committee on School Revitalisation would soon begin a statewide inspection of selected schools and directed Education Secretaries to maintain accurate records.

“The committee will visit selected schools to assess conditions and make recommendations for revitalisation as part of ongoing reforms to strengthen basic education in the state,” Toro said.

He noted that the assessment will help the government address gaps and improve school infrastructure so that learning environments remain safe when schools reopen.
