Gov Ahmed charges Corps members on skill acquisition

Kwara State Governor, Dr Abdulfatah Ahmed, has advised Corps members posted to the state to avail themselves of the various entrepreneurial trainings during the orientation and learn skills to be self reliant after service.

Gov Ahmed gave the advice during the opening of the 2016 Batch ‘B’
Orientation course of the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) at the permanent orientation camp, Yikpata, Kwara.

The Governor was represented at the occasion by the Head of Service (HOS), Hajia Sara Umar.

A total of 1, 961 prospective Corps members also took oath of
Allegiance at the ceremony administered by the Chief Judge of the
state, represented by Justice (Mrs) Aminat Ishaq.

“I advise you to take advantage of the skill acquisition programmes
during the orientation to prepare yourselves for the future,” the
Governor added.

He said his government believed in providing employment for the youths of the state and has put in place various empowerment schemes.

According to Gov Ahmed, the state government has set aside the sum
N1.9b for the empowerment and micro credit scheme which he said Corps
members posted to the state can also benefit from.

The governor also charged the Corps members to participate actively in
community development during their primary assignments.

“Your contributions to community development are noteworthy and
further enhance the relevance of the National Youth Service Scheme.

“Work hard with the grassroots people to improve the health and
socio-economic lives of the community you are posted to,” Gov Ahmed
added.

He advised the Corps members to be cautious of dangerous reptiles who will be looking cool place to stay as a result of the hot weather.

Gov Ahmed appealed to the Corps members to always wear their boots during the orientation.

In his address, the NYSC state Coordinator, Mr Eric Enyenihi
congratulated the Corps members on their successes in their
examinations that qualified them to be called for the national
service.

“No doubt, this, the beginning of a new phase in your lives as you
getting inducted into the National Youth Service Corps..

“It is therefore my earnest desire that you will exhibit the same
level commitment that saw you through your academic pursuits in all the duties that shall be assigned to you in the course of the National Service,” Enyenihi said.

The Coordinator told the Governor that a total of 1, 961 corps members comprising 1, 071 males and 890 females were registered as at the close of the registration at 12.00 midnight on Friday.

He appealed to the Governor for his financial assistance in form of
the annual subvention to the NYSC and meal subsidy during the
orientation camp.

The coordinator also made a case for utility vehicle for effective
monitoring of NYSC activities.

Enyenihi intimated the governor on the need to build and existing
hostel facilities in the camp to solve the problem of inadequate
hostel accommodation.

He appealed to the governor for the provision of adequate security at the camp to prevent cases of theft being experienced in the camp over the years.

“The prompt attention of the state government to these requests will in no small way ease the operation of the scheme in the state,” the Coordinator added.
