Gov. Ugwuanyi finally reveals who will succeed himn
Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State said his successor in 2023 would emerge from a process of dialogue grounded in justice and fairness.
Ugwuanyi said this Thursday in Enugu at a political rally organized by the senatorial district of Enugu East.
The governor, who was responding to requests from residents of the area to choose his successor in the region, said their messages were well understood.
“I listened to all the speeches. Rest assured that the content and context of the messages have been understood. Dialogue, equity and justice must prevail in the fullness of time, ”he said.
Ugwuanyi said he appreciated the support given to him by locals, adding that this would not be taken for granted.
The governor said the area became the area that won him the second highest number of votes in the 2019 governorship election.
He praised the people of the region for their contribution to the peace in the state, adding that all hands must be on the bridge to maintain the same even after his term expires.
Ugwuanyi said his desire was to leave the state in absolute peace when his term expired.
Earlier, rally organizer and Enugu State Assembly Speaker Chief Edward Ubosi said it was the area’s turn to produce the next state governor in accordance with the existing zoning policy.
Ubosi said the area, comprising six local government areas, would support anyone emerging from the area.
In a goodwill message, Dr Ben Nwoye, chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Enugu State Chapter, said the party had already assigned the post of governor to the Enugu East Senate District.
Nwoye called on the leadership of the People Democratic Party (PDP) to also demarcate the position in the region.
The president of the APC said he was present at the event to implore the governor to anoint his successor from the zone.
According to Nwoye, if the PDP acceded to the demand, the two political parties would then eliminate it at the polls.
However, PDP chairman Chief Augustine Nnamani said the PDP had its internal procedure and had not zoned the position.
Nnamani, however, said the party leadership would meet soon to deliberate on the area that would produce the state’s next governor.
“In a short time the party will be reuniting but rest assured that everything will go as planned. As a true son of the zone, I cannot go against your wishes, ”Nnamani said.
The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that other dignitaries who spoke in favor of the area producing the next state governor included the former governor of the former Anambra state, Chief Jim Nwobodo.
The others are Senator Ken Nnamani, the members of the National Assembly of the zone and the traditional chiefs of the zone.
