Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has approved an immediate extension of the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years, alongside an increase in their years of service from 35 to 40 years.
The announcement was made on Sunday during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion, Ado-Ekiti, where the governor also presented ₦46 million in cash awards to outstanding teachers in recognition of their dedication and excellence.
Governor Oyebanji explained that the decision to extend the retirement age was part of a deliberate effort to retain experienced educators and further strengthen the quality of teaching in public schools across the state. He described the measure as a strategic policy aimed at enhancing human capacity in the education sector and ensuring knowledge continuity.
To ensure effective implementation, the governor disclosed that a special committee will be inaugurated to supervise the process and determine eligibility, emphasizing that only teachers who are physically and mentally fit will benefit from the policy.
In addition to the extension, Oyebanji announced an upward review of allowances for Science Teachers and Heads of Departments in schools, as well as the immediate payment of outstanding 2019 leave bonuses owed to teachers.
“Teachers are the foundation upon which the future of our state is built,” the governor said. “This initiative aligns with our shared prosperity agenda, which is designed to improve teachers’ welfare and motivate them to continue shaping the next generation of leaders.”
Governor Oyebanji reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing education and teacher welfare, noting that the sector remains central to his development vision for Ekiti State. He also commended teachers for their resilience, innovation, and commitment despite economic challenges, assuring them that government would continue to implement policies that reflect their contributions to nation-building.
