An Ilorin-based civil society advocacy group, The Future Leaders, has decried the attempt to tarnish the reputation of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof AbdulGaniyu Ambali, and his predecessor, Prof Ishaq Olanrewaju Oloyede, by those it called “enemies of progress”.

The group described a recent publication by The Nation newspaper in which mischievous allegations of maladministration were levelled against Prof. Ambali and Prof. Oloyede as “the handiwork of the enemies of progress”.

According to a press statement jointly signed by the Chairman and Spokesman of The Future Leaders, Mr. Abdulkareem Abdulrahman and Mr. Abdulganeey Abdulqadri, respectively, the group criticized the publication, saying, “The recent upsurge in the media siege on the University is an indirect renewal of the timeless press offensive that the accomplishments of Ilorin Emirate and her leading lights always attract from the Lagos-Ibadan axis of the Nigerian press”.

The group that is dedicated to promoting democratic culture, good governance and probity in Nigeria, said, “A perusal of the publication will convince an unbiased observer that the orchestration was not unilaterally initiated by the newspaper but prompted and aided by the unrepentantly disgruntled elements within, who are unhappy with Unilorin’s persistently rising profile”.

The Future Leaders further stressed that having gone through the series, it is convinced that “none of the allegations levelled against the administration of Prof. Ambali can withstand painstaking empiricism”.

The group said, “We are aroused, beyond comprehension, with the frivolity exhibited in the write-up to the effect that simply because the Vice-Chancellor answers the same surname and comes from the same town with the Dean of Veterinary Medicine, then the two of them must necessarily be siblings”.

It said, “We are, however, delighted to submit that our independent and thorough investigations revealed that the allegations are pure products of lazy, incoherent and chaotic minds, who are bent on destroying the hard-earned reputation of the Vice-Chancellor and that of the institution which our community is proud to be its host”.

The group pointed out that no sane mind will take the enemies of progress serious “with the magnitude and quality of the Vice-Chancellor’s achievements in the human capacity and infrastructural advancement of the nation’s most subscribed university in the last half-a-decade”.
