Ilorin Durbar 2019: Kwara CP assures of maximum security

The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Kayode Egbetokun, has assured the people of the Ilorin emirate, friends and visitor of adequate security before, during and after the forthcoming Durbar festival in Ilorin.

Egbetokun stated this in Ilorin when the Chairman of the Ilorin Emirate Durbar Committee, Engr. Suleiman Yahaya Alapansapa led other members on a courtesy visit to the command headquarters.

Egbetokun, who noted that he was not unaware of the enormity of durbar, said the force would work with the committee to make the event peaceful.

The police boss informed that his institution has an existing synergy with sister security agencies in the state and would not hesitate to mobilise their personnel for the durbar festivity if need be.

He also disclosed that An Area Commander of the force would be deployed to work directly with the durbar committee as part of measures to provide adequate security for the ceremony.

The CP therefore urged the committee to partner with the force, assuring that the command was ready to assist the committee the make the event worthwhile.

Alapansanpa had earlier told the police boss that the committee, at the instance of the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, was set up to plan and implement a durbar for 2019.

He described the durbar including horse riding during festivities as one of the cultural heritage of the Ilorin Emirate, saying that it was aimed at showing royalty and prowess of the emirate during warfare, which was used to “expand our territory”.

The committee chairman added that the focus of the ceremony was to draw global attention that would ultimately attract investors to the state.

Alapansanpa said over 500 horses would be on display during the event just as he added that the committee would need heavy presence police personnel because of unprecedented crowd expected to attend.

Also speaking, a retired Grand Kadi of the state and member of the Ilorin Emirate Durbar Committee, Justice Salihu Oloruntoyin Muhammad, reiterated that the people of the emirate are peace loving and commended the police for being up and doing in their duties.

Muhammad, who specifically applauded the police commissioner for maintaining professionalism since his deployment to the state, prayed for divine elevation for him.

The durbar committee also visited the State Director of State Security Service, Mr Abdulmumini Abdullahi, in his office in Ilorin.

Alapansanpa said the essence of the durbar event was to preserve the cultural heritage of the people of the Emirate, hence the setting up of the committee under his chairmanship.

The state Director of SSS, Abdullahi said cultural revival was needed in the country, pointing out that the prevalence of problems in the society was to due to the inability of the youth to be acquainted with their background.
