Ilorin: Understanding the significance of Mallam Ubandoma title in Emirate System

On Thursday, 22nd July 2021, the ancient city of Ilorin was agog when the Emir of Ilorin and Chairman, Kwara State Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari,CFR, honoured yet another distinguished personalities of Ilorin Emirate origin with traditional titles for their contributions to community development, religious propagation as well as promotion of peaceful co-existence in the land.

In line with the tradition of Emirate Councils across the nation, traditional titles are usually conferred by the Sultan (Sokoto Caliphate) Emir (Ilorin Emirate and others) Shehu (Borno Emirate), Lamido (Adamawa Emirate) and Etsu (Bida and other Nupe speaking Emirates) among others, as may be required by their Traditional and Chieftancy Laws.

The new appointees are; Dr. Alimi Abdulrazaq (Mutawalle of Ilorin), Sheikh Dr. AbdulKadir Oba-Solagberu (Mallam Ubandoma of Ilorin) Sheikh Faruq Onikijipa (Grand Mufti of Ilorin) Sheikh Yakub Aliagan ( Sarkin Malamai of Ilorin) and Alhaji Yakubu Gobir (Madawaki of Ilorin).

Others are Alhaji Saka Onimago (Shetimma of Ilorin), Mallam Saliu Mustapha (Turaki of Ilorin) Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje (Tafida of Ilorin) and Alhaji Kawu Agaka (Dan Iya of Ilorin)

With the latest developments, Ilorin Emirate Council has been adjudged to have appointed well-deserved persons to the high ranking positions that has direct impacts on the wellbeing of the people, capable of promoting social interactions among other Emirate councils in the country with long historical tides and footprints.

However, prominent among the newly appointed titles is the Mallam Ubandoma of Ilorin Emirate which is bestowed on the National President of Shehu Alimi Foundation for Peace and Development, Dr. AbdulKadir Oba-Solagberu, for his steadfastness in the propagation of Islam, a well respected philanthropist and founder of Darul-Kitab Wa Sunnah College of Arabic and Islamic Studies with aged-long records of mentoring of youths with moral values and Islamic jurisprudence.

Records have shown that Mallam Ubandoma is a revered title which can only be confered on a distinguished and trusted cleric who has demonstrated strong commitments to the advancement of knowledge, philanthropy, religious ideals and socio-economic advancement of the society with impeccable accomplishments.

The title is exclusively reserved and conferred on any person who has over the years proved himself by his commitment to education, believing that it is the catalyst for human capacity development and among all, a cleric who holds the Emir in very high esteem.

History has revealed that the title of Mallam Ubandoma has long and glorious recognition in Sokoto Caliphate. It was first conferred on Ubandoma Abubakar by Sultan Abdulrahman who ruled from 1891 to 1902. The second Ubandoma, Malam Ahmadu, was appointed in 1938.

The third recipient of the prestigious title, Ubandoma Malam Abdullahi, was appointed in 1951 while the fourth was appointed in 1986, while upon his demise in 2016, the current Malam Ubandoma of Sokoto Caliphate, Ubandoma Umar Saidu was appointed by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar CFR.

With the appointment of Dr. AbdulKadir Oba-Solagberu as the 1st Mallam Ubandoma of Ilorin Emirate, the choice of the Emir of Ilorin has been described as well-placed due to his numerous contributions to humanity as the pioneer Chairman of the Kwara State Arabic Education Board, member of the prestigious Council of Ulamas, member of the World Muslim Congress, Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Promoter of the proposed Darul-kitab University, Agbeyangi-Ilorin and founder of Darul Kitab Wa College of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Ilorin with over 100,000 students/mentee spread globally, propagating Islamic orientations and religions harmony both in rural and urban settlements.

The 1st Mallam Ubandoma of Ilorin Emirate is a renowned scholar and a model preacher who preaches moderation, tolerance and good citizenship.

He holds a Doctorate Degree (PhD) from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria after his foundation studies in Islamic Republic of Pakistan with multicultural, multi-disciplinary and objective-minded views to issues of community concerns and national interests with strong international connections.

There is no doubt that Dr. AbdulKadir Oba-Solagberu will continue to strive towards preserving the glory of Ilorin Emirate with his deep knowledge of Arabic and Islamic law through his teachings as required of Mallam Ubandoma to Islamic clerics in the Emirate.

In his goodwill message to the Mallam Ubandoma of Ilorin Emirate, the Mallam Ubandoma of Sokoto Caliphate, Alhaji Umar Saidu who is also the current Secretary to the Sokoto State Government, said: “Assalamu Alaikum, Sir. Eid Mubarak. I write to heartily congratulate you on your appointment as the Mallam Ubandoma of Ilorin Emirate.

“May Allah SWT bless you, the appointment and your family. I am the Mallam Ubandoma of Sokoto. I was turbaned in 2016 by the present Sultan in succession of my ancestors who have been having the title even before colonisation.”
