Improved fuel supply: Transporters suspend plan to occupy NNPCL
Following the gradual improvement in the supply of fuel, some groups of transporters who threatened to occupy the headquarters of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPCL after 78-hour ultimatum over acute fuel and gasoline scarcity has suspended their plan.
The groups, which includes the Commercial Motorcycles Association of Nigeria, COMAN; Tricycles Owners Association of Nigeria, TOWAN; National Association of Traders of Nigeria, NASTAN; Luxurious Bus Operators Union, LUBOU; Market Women Association of Nigeria, MAWAN and the Trailer Drivers Association of Nigeria, TADAN, had on Monday, February 6 issued the ultimatum to the NNPCL to resolve the fuel crisis.
They specifically sought the intervention of the Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipreye Sylva and the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Mele Kyari on the crisis to avoid calling out their members to occupy the headquarters of the organization after the expiration of the ultimatum.
The groups had in the warning action demanded for the removal of Sylva and Kyari as part of moves to resolve the crisis, but in a statement signed and issued on Sunday by their national chairmen, Chief Boniface Ogwu Ikedi and Dr. Basil Ahoade Ekanem on behalf of four others said they put-off of strike as a result of improvement in the availability of fuel across the country.
They particularly praised the NNPCL for the ease of fuel scarcity and called for its sustainability.
“Our members have monitored activities of some filling stations across the six geographical zones and discovered availability of fuel with a fair pump price adjusted between N195 to N198 per litre,” they stated.
Accordingly, the groups said the red alert issued to their members have been withdrawn, while they have been asked to go about their normal businesses.
“We acknowledged prompt intervention in the fuel scarcity which has led to its availability across the country.
“We commend the Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPL, Mele Kyari and the Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipreye Sylva for their efforts so far, which have no doubt made fuel available,” the statement added.
