Insecurity: Buhari to address NASS Thursday

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Thursday, December 10, address a joint session of the National Assembly on the security challenges facing the country.

The President’s Personal Assistant on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, on Monday disclosed this on her verified Twitter handle, @Laurestar.

“President @MBuhari will address a joint session of the National Assembly (@nassnigeria) on Thursday, December 10, 2020,” the tweet read.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, had last week confirmed the acceptance of the President to brief the lawmakers on the increasing cases of insecurity in the country.

The House had last week Tuesday invited the President to appear on the floor of the lower legislative chamber to offer explanation on the federal government’s efforts in addressing the challenge.

This followed a motion of urgent national importance brought by the Borno State caucus over last weekend’s killing of farmers in the state.

While the House summoned Buhari over the ugly incident, among other resolutions, the Senate, for the umpteenth time, asked the President to sack his service chiefs.

In his motion on the floor of the House, Hon. Satomi Ahmed, on behalf of other 10 sponsors from the troubled state, said he was pained that the terrorist group tied up and slit the throats of the farmers in an insane and barbaric manner.

According to him, the inability of the military and security forces to avert the continued wanton killings by Boko Haram insurgents, bandits, and terrorists in the North East and across the country remains a source of concern.

But the lawmaker incurred the wrath of his colleagues when he deliberately skipped the prayer on the need to summon Buhari by opting to call on the President to amongst other things, declare a state of emergency on security matters.

At this point, another lawmaker, Usman Jaha raised a point of order under matters of privileges, drawing the Speaker’s attention to the misnomer.

“We, all the members from Borno State, sat together and agreed that all the prayers of the motion must remain as they are. We all agreed that Mr. President should be invited to come explain the security situation in the country, especially the North East,” he insisted.
