Insecurity: Media Watch Group urges Nigerians to embark on intensive prayers

The Muslim Media Watch Group, MMWG, has called on every citizen to intensify their prayers on the future of the country, especially as they prepare for another general elections next year.

MMWG, in a statement issued on Sunday by its national coordinator, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, noted that “the insecurity created by criminals through banditry, kidnapping for ransom, arsons and killings are highly frightening.”

It added that “the conduct and utterances of most of our politicians have continued to create lots of fears in patriotic Nigerians.”

The group also wondered why the Nigeria Police authorities have not reacted to the reported allegation of thousands of arms and ammunition reportedly missing from their Armoury in which the House of Representatives has ordered a probe.

While commending the Police for its commitment to duties and responsibilities, such a dangerous report it said, is worth denial or confirmation by the Police and information on what they have done so far in dealing with the scarring report.

On the deaths of Hanifa and Asmau, MMWG wondered “why wickedness, cruelty and inhumanity of ‘man to man’ are spreading fast like wild fire in Nigeria despite the acclaimed religiousity of the people.”

“Recently,  a Pastor reportedly killed his neighbour’s young girl of about 14 years of age in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, and dropped the lifeless body inside a container! The group wondered how these three terrible happenings and others across the country need be given accelerated hearing so that the terrible crimes could be punished severely and promptly,” Ibrahim stated.

The group, therefore, called on security agencies especially the Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Department of State Services, DSS and the National Intelligence Agency, NIA to synergise on how best to ensure that arrested criminals who confessed  to crimes are tried by the Judiciary promptly and cases decided within maximum of two weeks.

MMWG regretted that delay in trying offenders for whatever reason particularly those that were caught red-handed and confessed, is the bane of our legal process in Nigeria today, wondering how corruption has eaten deep into the fabric of the nation.

The group also condemned incessant jail-breaks in Nigeria’s Correctional Centres and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to come out immediately with strategies that would put a final stop to it.

Incessant jail-breaks, it said, has been a terrible crime in the last two years in Nigeria with thousands of criminals, including condemned armed robbers, drug-peddlers and murderers moving freely in the country after setting themselves free illegally.
