Israel, U.S. Launch Strikes on Iran as Explosions Rock Tehran

Date:

Explosions were reported across Tehran on Friday after the Israeli military launched coordinated strikes on Iran, in what regional media described as a joint operation with the United States.

Al Jazeera reported that a U.S. official confirmed the attacks were carried out as a joint military operation between Israel and the United States.

Iran’s state-affiliated Fars News Agency said several missiles struck University Street and the Jomhouri area in central Tehran, sending plumes of smoke into the sky.

The semiofficial Tasnim News Agency also reported additional explosions in the northern Seyyed Khandan district of the city.

Other Iranian media outlets said strikes were recorded beyond the capital, including in Ilam Province in western Iran.

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the operation, describing it as a major combat action targeting imminent threats.

“Short time ago, U.S. military began major combat operation in Iran. Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating threats from the Iranian regime,” Trump said in a statement.

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, said the missile strikes were launched to “remove threats to the State of Israel.”

There was no immediate confirmation from Iranian authorities on casualties or the extent of damage, as tensions in the region escalated following the strikes.
