Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday expressed his sadness over the death of Afenifere spokesman Yinka Odumakin, calling his death shocking.

Jonathan, in a statement released by his media aide Ikechukwu Eze, in Abuja, described Odumakin as a courageous patriot and advocate who has contributed so much to the nation’s development.

In a message titled “A great voice for fairness is gone,” the former president said the deceased “played an active role in the years of activism which spawned and stabilized civilian rule in our country.”

“I received with sadness the news of Odumakin’s death.

“He was a courageous patriot and advocate for rights who gave his all in the fight for a better Nigeria.

“He has been a great asset to just causes whose considerable contributions to the growth of civil society are beyond doubt.

“He has also fulfilled his status as a seasoned journalist and columnist who has promoted egalitarianism and social welfare, in his regular essays,” he said.

Jonathan said Odumakin left the world with rich democratic credentials, having played an active role in the years of activism that spawned and stabilized civilian rule in our country.

“As a culture buff, Odumakin lived his short life as a force to be reckoned with in propagating and protecting the interests of the Yoruba people in the wider social space of Nigeria.

“Now is not the time to lose such a strong promoter of the ideals that would move our nation forward in the desired direction of a united, just and equitable society,” he said.

Jonathan expressed his condolences to the wife of the deceased, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, to other members of his family, to the socio-cultural association Afenifere and to the whole of civil society.

“I pray to God to grant the soul of the deceased eternal rest and to bless Dr. Okei-Odumakin with the strength of spirit to bear the loss and to support the crusade for a just society,” he said. declared. (NOPE)
