Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has assured parents of public school students that security at post-primary schools will be strengthened following the abduction of 25 female students from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga.
One of the abducted students reportedly escaped during the incident, while 24 others were later released and handed over to the First Lady of Kebbi State, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Idris, authorities confirmed.
The governor said on Friday that the state government had begun extensive consultations to review and reinforce school security arrangements to prevent a recurrence. The engagements involve security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, education experts, and security consultants.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Kebbi State Qur’anic Recitation, Idris, represented by his deputy, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, urged parents to remain calm and cooperate with government as security measures are being overhauled.
“The safety of our children is non-negotiable. Government is working round the clock with relevant stakeholders to ensure schools are secure before reopening,” Tafida said.
Idris, a former teacher, expressed deep concern over the incident, stressing that education remains a top priority of his administration. He also appealed to well-meaning individuals and politicians in the state to support efforts to improve educational standards and learning environments.
The governor expressed optimism that ongoing reforms in the national security architecture, under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, would help curb armed banditry, citing their longstanding professional relationship.
The state government said public schools would reopen once security measures are completed and certified adequate.
The Qur’anic recitation event was attended by representatives of traditional institutions across the state, and concluded with awards to outstanding participants, including motorcycles and other household items.
