Kwara Assembly restricts Sec. Schools from illegal fees collection

The leadership of the Kwara State House of Assembly has directed all Public Secondary Schools in the state, to stop collection of extra fees above amount unanimously agreed by stakeholders in the education sector.

This was part of the resolutions of the House, following consideration of the report of the House Committee on Education and Human Capital Development, on “illegal fees collection by Headmasters and Principals of Public Primary and Secondary schools in the state.

Reading the resolutions of the House, the Deputy Speaker, Chief Mathew Okedare, who presided over the Wednesday’s sitting, said the need became imperative to check public schools from charging parents and Guardians above fees agreed by the Parent Teachers Association (PTA), Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), All Conference of Principals of Secondary schools (ANCOPSS).

Findings by ROYAL NEWS revealed that House equally directed the State Service Commission and Universal Basic Education Board, to sanction affected Principals and communicated such to the House.

The legislature also mandated that all extra amount collected above the agreed amount by the stakeholders, be refunded to the affected Parents and Guardians, before the end of first term of 2018/2019 academic session, while subsequent fees to be collected by the schools be receipted.

The Parliament then directed SUBEB and Teaching Service Commission, to be alive to their responsibility of monitoring schools to ensure accessible qualitative education in the State.

The House equally at its Wednesday’s sitting, directed its committee on Commerce, Cooperative, Industry and Social Development, to investigate Petition,written by RDSC International Service on ‘Illegal Construction of Shops and Hinderance to Movement of Trucks by Ilorin South Local Government Council, presented by the House Leader, Hon. Hassan Oyeleke.
