The Kwara State Deputy Governor, Mr Kayode Alabi,  has commended the federal  government over the closure of borders aimed at improving the nation’s economy.

Mr Alabi while speaking today at the Sensitization Workshop for Stakeholders on the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS on Border Management Strategy in Ilorin said the closure would boost the Nation’s economy and encourage local manufacturers and industrialists.

The Deputy Governor explained that change of mindset and attitudinal problems are parts of the reasons most people did not see anything good in border closure which he said has recorded great success.

He questioned craze for imported goods by Nigerians and noted that China and South Africa closed their boarders to set their countries on a path of greater growth and development.

Mr Alabi called on the people to look inward and patronize made in Nigeria goods and products to boost local production and the economy of the Nation.

The Deputy Governor stressed the need for Nigerians to do things right as the only way to improve the Nation in all ramifications.

Presenting the strategic document, the Comptroller General of Immigration, Mohammed Babandede represented by an Assistant Comptroller General, Mrs Funke Adeuyi explained that the system which has a five year implementation road plan would enable the NIS manage Nigerian boarders with the use of technology.

Mrs Adeuyi therefore solicited for the support all the security agencies and other stakeholders for the successful implementation of the strategy plan.

Speaking earlier, the Kwara state Comptroller of NIS, Mrs Edith Onyemenam explained that the Nigerian Boarder Management Service 2019 to 2023 strategic plan developed in collaboration with European Union, EU and International Organization for Migration, IOM is a landmark institutional approach for boarder management system that is designed to among other things enhance National Security and Economic Development.

Mrs Onyemenam said the strategic plan would also ensure Migrants’ Human Rights and protection of vulnerable migrants as well as reinforcing social harmony and fulfilling International agreement and partnerships.

She also noted that Kwara State was considered the appropriate state to begin the sensitization in the north central region of the country as a result of her expansive stretch of land boarder and a good cluster of communities along that corridor.

Representative of IOM, Mr Amos Ojo said the strategic plan would chart a new vision in security management and provide virtual security management.

Mr Ojo gave an assurance that the IOM would continue to partner Nigeria to ensure safer boarders.
