Kwara Governor secures release of 23 inmates, reviews 18 other cases

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, has secured the release and granting of pardon to 23 inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) pardon, ahead of the Eid-Kabir festival.

Speaking during his visit to the NCoS on Friday, the Governor said that the pardon granted to the inmates is a show of concern, love as well as means of reuniting them with their families, loved ones, as well as to enjoy the festival within the confine of their homes.

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Kwara State, Mr. Adegbulugbe Philip, said, “the 23 inmates who were granted pardon were released on the ground of health status, observation, and strong convinction that believe that the inmates have turned a new life.

“Cases of 18 inmates serving life sentences were equally reviewed. Some of such case reviewed include: 10 lifers were commuted to 21 years imprisonment; six lifers commuted to 10 years Imprisonment; two lifers commuted to two years imprisonment; and a female inmate serving seven years Imprisonment was reviewed to six months imprisonment.”

In his remarks, the Controller of Corrections in the State, Mr. Danmairomu Shuaib Ayodeji, appreciated the Governor for the good gesture, and advised the inmates to be worthy ambassadors of their various homes and not return back to crime.

He also appreciated the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa for making the environment enabling to operate, while also thanking the State Ministry of Justice for their efforts as such exercise will decongest the custodial centres.
