The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed the relocation of orientation camps in several states, including Kwara, Kaduna, Kebbi, Borno, Gombe, and Plateau, citing security concerns as the primary reason. The move aims to safeguard corps members and camp officials, particularly in high-risk areas, where military escorts are provided for added protection.
In a statement repoted, the NYSC refuted claims made in a recent publication suggesting corps members were being endangered or subjected to a “ransom clause.” The Scheme clarified that no such provision exists in the NYSC Act, Bye-laws, or official documents, describing the report as entirely fictitious and misleading.
The Scheme also addressed specific cases referenced in the publication, clarifying that Musa Usman Abba, cited as a victim, is no longer a serving corps member, having completed service in 2023. NYSC emphasized that linking his situation to the Scheme was inaccurate and a misrepresentation of facts.
Highlighting its commitment to corps members’ welfare, the NYSC disclosed that over ₦500 million has been spent on urgent medical interventions in the past five years. The Scheme maintains life insurance coverage for all corps members through a long-standing partnership with Capital Express Assurance Limited and enrollment under the National Health Insurance Scheme, covering members during and up to three weeks after service.
Acknowledging broader national security challenges, the NYSC stressed its ongoing collaboration with security agencies and proactive measures implemented since 2024 to ensure safety in the North West and earlier in parts of the North East. The Scheme also urged the media and public to verify information before dissemination, warning that misinformation undermines public trust and national institutions.
