Kwara workers protest nonpayment of salary; seal off Finance Ministry
Hundreds of civil servants in Kwara state on Wednesday staged a protest over non-payment of salaries, percentage payment and promotion without cash backing.
The workers made the peaceful protest, blocking the entrance of the Kwara state Ministry of Finance, and Accountant General Office in Ilorin.
The protesters were mainly from the State Water Corporation, Kwara Football Academy, Council for Arts and Culture, as well as Rural Electrification Board.
The peaceful protest was led by Comrade Muritala Saheed Olayinka, State Chairman Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations Civil Service Technical and Recreation Services Employees, (AUPCTRE) and the Secretary, Comrade Saliu Oluwole Suleiman.
Comrade Suleiman said that the MDAs workers were owned two months outstanding salaries while workers of Kwara Football Academy were being owned five months salaries.
He maintained that workers of the water corporation have been on industrial action for the past one month due to no remittance of about N37m cooperative money deducted from their salary.
State Vice Chairman RATTAWU, Comrade Saeedu Gagara explained that 50 percent of April salary was paid to workers of the Council for Arts and Culture, while that of March salary was not paid.
The protesters also condemned contracting of streetlights the solar project by the state government to private contractors instead of using its manpower at Rural Electrification Board.
The protesters had gathered as early as 7 a.m in the morning to deny workers of the Ministry of Finance and Accountant General Office access to their duty post.
They carried placards with different inscriptions such as “KFA over 3 Years Pension Unremitted”, “Non Payment of 2 Months Salaries to State Parastatals” among others.
