Labour Party Gains Momentum in Benue as Key Figures Defect

Date:

The Labour Party (LP) is consolidating its presence in Benue State following a wave of high-profile defections from other political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The momentum comes after Hon. Philip Agbese, the member representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency and Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, defected from the APC to the Labour Party. Sources say Agbese’s decision was influenced by internal challenges within the APC in the state.

Agbese’s move reportedly brought along a significant number of supporters from the APC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and ADC within his constituency and beyond, including a ward chairman, party secretary, and women leader.

Additionally, Comrade Tony Christopher Ochube, popularly known as Comrade 1010, has formally joined the Labour Party. In a letter dated March 22, 2026, addressed to the Ward Chairman of the LP in Ichama Ward II, Okpokwu Local Government Area, Ochube announced his decision to resign from the ADC and align with the LP.

Ochube cited consultations with his supporters and political associates as key to his decision, explaining that he sought a more effective platform to serve his constituency. He emphasized that the Labour Party’s ideals and vision align with his commitment to good governance, grassroots development, youth and women empowerment, and transparent leadership.

These defections signal growing support for the Labour Party in Benue, potentially reshaping the state’s political dynamics ahead of upcoming elections.
