LaLiga has officially cancelled its proposed plan to stage the Barcelona vs Villarreal league match in Miami, USA.
The high-profile fixture was initially scheduled to take place at the Hard Rock Stadium on December 20 and would have marked the first time a European league game was played outside the continent.
However, the Spanish topflight body decided to scrap the plan following widespread criticism and opposition from players, clubs, and football stakeholders.
In a statement released on Tuesday, LaLiga confirmed the cancellation, citing ongoing uncertainty in Spain as one of the reasons behind the decision.
āFollowing discussions with the promoter of the official LaLiga match in Miami, the latter has announced its decision to cancel the event due to the uncertainty surrounding Spain in recent weeks,ā the statement read.
āLaLiga deeply regrets that this project, which represented a historic and unparalleled opportunity for the internationalization of Spanish football, cannot go ahead,ā it added.
The decision ends months of speculation surrounding the controversial plan, which had aimed to expand LaLigaās global reach by taking Spanish football directly to fans in the United States.
