The Labour Party, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to respect the decision of its convention by giving full recognition to Dr Mike Omotosho as its new National Chairman.

The party made this call in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ebere Ifendu, on Sunday in Abuja.

Ifundu said Omotosho was elected as LP new chairman at the party’s National Convention held in October 2017 following the removal of Abdulkadir Abdulsalam for alleged corruption.

She expressed concern that INEC had yet to reflect the name of Omotosho in its website since 2017.

Ifendu enjoined INEC to strengthen the country’s democracy by subjecting itself to the nation’s constitution; by ensuring that internal democracy prevailed in political party primaries.

She said that the LP only wanted INEC to stand firm on the side of the law by upholding the decision of the party’s convention.

“I am a lawyer and I can tell you that the Supreme Court, has ruled that the convention is the highest decision making body of a political party,” she said.

She explained that the party’s convention was duly monitored by INEC, where a new chairman emerged.

Ebere warned Nigerians to beware of impostors, who were exploiting aspirants and election hopefuls under the umbrella of the party.

“Any aspirant should know that the leadership of the party lies here and not on impostors.

“The state chairmen across the country met and upheld the same decision reached at the convention.

“INEC should be an unbiased umpire, not a supporter of those we duly suspended from the party for defrauding innocent citizens and embezzling party fund.

“The integrity of the institution cannot be compromised; silence is no longer golden,” she added.
