MDCN urges KWSG to take full occupation of Unilorin mini campus

The Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi, has urged the Kwara State Government to take back the full ownership and occupation of the facilities of the University of Ilorin Mini Campus to accommodate the students of the College of Medical Science at the State General Hospital.

Dr Sanusi gave the advice in Ilorin at the weekend during the Council’s advisory visit to the management of the General Hospital in Ilorin.

He reiterated the need for the Kwara State Government to take over the facilities due to the potential advantages to the academic progress and development of the College.

He said the visit was part of the facilities assessment in line with the regulatory and advisory role of the Council.

“We have seen the facilities and they are okay. Regrettably, we had expected the Kwara State Government to take full occupation of the whole facilities left behind by the University of Ilorin rather than the University still retaining some of the facilities. This is a disadvantage to this new medical college”, he said.

He observed that the government was under- utilizing the facilities by not taking full ownership and occupation of the facilities.

“Our advice is that the Kwara State Government should take the whole facilities at the Mini Campus and give it to the college because this place originally belonged to the state before it was given to the federal government.

“Experience has shown that in other locations where those federal institutions took off, when they left, they returned the properties back to the original owners”.

He said there is a need for the state government to take back all the facilities at the University for the college to provide a conducive environment for academic activities.

Prof Alao, who led the team from the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, said all the necessary arrangements for the academic excellence of the College were being put in place.

He said the management of the university had requested consultants interested in working for the college to signify interest.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director of the State General Hospital, Dr Abdulkadir Ahmed assured the Council that the management would follow guidelines of the Council in order to put the College on the global academic map.
