Most Health Records officers in hospitals are quacks – officials

Most personnel working as health records officers in most hospitals and health facilities are quacks and does not have the requisite training required of a professional.

Zonal Coordinator, Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria, HRORBN, north west zonal office- Kaduna, Mallam Umar Sani made disclosure during sensitization seminar in Kaduna.

Sani’s disposition was also corroborated by Georgina Aloysius also of HRORBN, we well as Abubakar Abdullahi of head of department of health record officers ABUTH Zaria who is also the Secretary, Association of Health Records and Information Management Practitioners of Nigeria, Kaduna  chapter.

The trio who made the revelations at a one day sensitization seminar for health reporters held on Monday in Kaduna state at Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial hospital, Kaduna, lamented that most government and private health facilities relied on untrained healthy records officers, HRO, adding that even professionals who did to renewed their licence are also considered as quacks.

Georgina Aloysius, said the consequences of the engaging quacks HRO, among other things, includes improper health records keeping and dishing out health records or information of patients without due process, describing the action as unethical.

According to her, the medical record is an important compilation of facts about patient’s life and health, including documented data on past and present illnesses and treatment written by health professionals Caring for the patients.

In a paper tilted : History and development of medical records practice, Aloysius maintained that the function of the board includes among others, ensuring professional discipline of health records professional, registration, maintaining registrar for forms and formats for the register of qualified and approve members.

The expert said lost medical records has serious clinical, personal, Administrative and legal consequences that could lead to legal actions and claims of damages.

Sani, in a paper said the HRORBN, was established by degree 39 of 1989, now Cap H2 2004, with the mandate to control and regulate the practice of health records management in Nigeria and matters related thereto.

He expressed regret about the most federal health hospitals employed the services of quacks rather than insisting on trained records officers, stressing that the board would soon embarked on campaign against the quackery in health establishment and ensure that only those with requisite qualifications are allowed to practice as HRO in both privately and public health facilities.

Also in a paper, ‘Electronic Health Records’, the presenter, Abubakar Abbdullahi of the ABUTH Zaria, said electronic health record is a digital version of a patient’s paper chat, which required real times.

He said the electronic version has value to the community and nation in terms of providing an easy means of identify endemic and epidemic diseases in community and compiling national morbidity and mortality statistics for the nation, among other advantages.
