Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has warned midfielder Gianluca Prestianni that his career at the club could be over if he is found guilty of racially abusing Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. during their Champions League knockout tie in Lisbon on February 17.
Vinicius alleged that Prestianni made racist remarks towards him during the first leg of the fixture. The 20-year-old has strongly denied the accusations, but UEFA still imposed a ban on him for the second leg in Spain while the investigation continues.
UEFA is actively looking into the matter to determine the veracity of the allegations. The governing body’s investigation could have significant implications for Prestianni and both clubs involved.
Mourinho previously faced criticism for suggesting that Vinicius had encouraged fans with his goal celebration, remarks which sparked debate in the media and among football supporters.
On Sunday, Mourinho reiterated his stance on racism in football, stating, “If my player does not respect these principles, which are mine and Benfica’s as well, then that player’s career with a coach named Jose Mourinho and at a club named Benfica will come to an end,” emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy on discriminatory behavior.
