NESREA to wage war against motorists with emission

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, (NESREA), is to embark on Vehicular Emission Test from next month (April) in Kwara State.
This action is to check all vehicles polluting the atmosphere while on the major highways through the thick smoke motorist emit from their vehicles and those operating generator sets along the road side.
The Kwara State Coordinator of NESREA, Mr Martins Ikechukwu Enenwaene disclosed this in Ilorin , the State capital while speaking with journalists on Sunday.
According to him ,the equipment for the enforcement of the Vehicle Emission law have been imported and would be mounted at strategic locations and those that emit smokes would be detected and fined in accordance with the law as their staff would be trained on the usage of the new device.
Mr Enenwaene added that his agency would also enforce the law that guides against noisy environment by those operating musical facilities such as recording studios and selling Compact Disk and cassettes as NESREA has a standard for noise.
According to him, the agency embarks on sensitization programmes and create awareness every Thursday’s at schools and market places on its activities and on the need for people to comply.
The State Coordinator said it was mandatory for every owner of facilities to carry out an environmental audit every three years while failure to comply would lead to litigation.
Mr Enenwaene disclosed that there is robust relationship between the agency and state government through its agencies such as the State Ministry of Environment and State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) as well as security operatives and commended the people of the state for their compliance on environmental laws.
He appealed to Nigerians to be wary of what ever they put into the environment and guide against polluting the environment more so that the world is now experiencing climate change and global warming.
The State Coordinator said the greatest challenge facing the agency is lack of facilities and funds which according to him , had affected the enforcement of their mandate .
