Fresh documents released from the Jeffrey Epstein files have revived scrutiny of Prince Andrew, raising further questions about his past associations and compounding long-standing damage to his public standing.
The newly disclosed materials include emails and photographs that appear to show close contact between Andrew, formally known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, and Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s former associate who is serving a 20-year prison sentence in the United States for sex trafficking.
One set of emails features correspondence between Maxwell and a person identified only as “A,” who also used the alias “Invisible Man.” In one message sent from Balmoral in August 2001, “A” asks Maxwell whether she had found “some new inappropriate friends.” Maxwell responds that she had found only “appropriate friends” and signs off with “kisses,” suggesting familiarity between the correspondents.
The identity of “A” is not explicitly confirmed in the documents, and the language used in the emails has prompted debate, including the use of American English terms. However, some references, such as remarks about leaving the Royal Navy, appear consistent with Andrew’s biography.
Other documents outline arrangements for a 2002 trip to Peru, including requests from Maxwell for discreet introductions to individuals described as “intelligent, pretty, fun and from good families.” The records do not provide evidence of wrongdoing, and inclusion in the files does not in itself establish guilt.
The timing of the August 2001 email has drawn attention because it was sent months after Virginia Giuffre alleged she was trafficked and forced to have sex with Andrew at Maxwell’s London residence—claims the prince has consistently denied.
The files also show that in April 2020, the US Department of Justice formally requested the UK government’s assistance in securing Andrew’s cooperation as a witness in Epstein-related investigations, including details of his relationship with Epstein and any financial ties. Andrew has not been charged with any crime.
The latest disclosures add to earlier embarrassment caused by images from the Epstein files, including photographs of Andrew with Maxwell at Sandringham. While the documents raise new questions, they stop short of proving misconduct, leaving unresolved issues that continue to shadow the prince.
