Adedayo Thomas, NFVCB boss scores board low

By Sharon Obi

Alhaji Adedayo Thomas, Director- General, National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), said the board would  set  up a task force  team to help sensitise movie makers for the growth of  the sector.

The newly appointed Director General said this in a statement signed by Mr Etuechere Martins, Head, Corporate Affairs of the board, and made available to newsmen in Abuja on Friday.

Thomas disappointed at the low performance of the board, expressed concerns that the board as a regulatory agency had not lived up to expectations in recent years, leading to chaos in the system.

He said further that, “the chaos has taken profit away from the right beneficiaries to the profiteers”.

The Director General observed that it was in view of the huge loss being suffered by hard working practitioners that the board is setting up the Task Force to help sanitise the movie market.

“The board will help to sanitise the movie market and ensure that only approved and classified movies are found in the market,’’ Thomas said.

The NFVCB boss also commended the founding fathers of the movie industry for their contributions and efforts to the growth of the industry.

Thomas will serve as the board’s chairman, while Gabosky Okoye, popular movie maker and distributor, will serve as one of the members.

Also, Chief Eddie Ugbomah, veteran movie maker, will serve as patron and adviser.

The NFVCB is the regulatory body set up by Act No.85 of 1993 to regulate films and video industry in Nigeria.

The Board is empowered by law to classify all films and videos whether imported or produced locally.

It is also the duty of the Board to register all films and video outlets across the country and to keep a register of such registered outlets among other functions.
