Nigerian Prison boss restates commitments to boosting staff, inmates welfare
The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has revealed plans to prevent jailbreaks, attacks and improve the well-being of staff and inmates in all custody facilities.
The Comptroller General, NCoS, Mr. Haliru Nababa, said this in his New Year message to staff and inmates in Abuja.
Nababa thanked all the NCoS officers and men for working tirelessly under challenging conditions to ensure full delivery of the service mandate in previous years.
He said that the present administration was very concerned about the welfare of citizens, including those behind bars.
The GC also said that the country was challenged with many security problems that resulted in a series of attacks on external prisons.
According to him, this trend is quite alarming as it threatens the sovereignty and prosperity of our nation.
“However, we are not resting on our oars to ensure we stem the tide and shame all enemies of the state.
“As we face the year 2022, we will consolidate the gains made so far and devise better means to overcome all challenges.
“We will continue to rally support from state and non-state actors, and members of the public to overcome the challenges.
“While I work hard to ensure that all officers and men are well equipped and favorably disposed to carry out their duties, there will be no room for indolence,” he said.
Nababa noted that the new era of corrections has placed on staff a heightened call of duty that requires absolute commitment, a change in attitude and a reorientation of values.
According to him, building on the already established legacies of my predecessors, I have emphasized this unit performance evaluation team.
He said the team was set up to monitor compliance with policy directives and project implementation strategies.
Nababa said the team, among others, must also pay close attention to inmate nutrition in terms of the quality and quantity of food served.
He added that he would also monitor inmates’ accessibility to basic medical care; as well as the availability of recreational facilities in all Custody Centers.
He said: “Therefore, we intend to revive our industries and strengthen our Farm Centers to improve inmate training and reorientation of values.
“We will also strive to foster the virtues of discipline, hard work and dedication among staff for further motivation.
“In addition, a quarterly performance evaluation form has been made available to monitor inmate attendance at court, vocational training, educational opportunities and other psychosocial support programs.
“I will ensure judicious use of available resources and facilitate rapid implementation of our new law through mass advocacy, awareness, synergy and strategic leadership.
“We promise our commitment to update our statutory mandate with all sense of responsibility. We owe our country the best and that continues to be our commitment,” he said.
The NCoS chief commended all development partners, stakeholders, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and members of the press for their support and partnership over the past years.
He called for a stronger working relationship in the coming year, adding that there is no sacrifice too great for one’s country.
