NISO Links Low Power Output to Gas Shortages, Generation Constraints

Date:

The Nigerian Electricity System Operator (NISO) has attributed the country’s current low power output to generation shortfalls and inadequate gas supply to thermal power plants.

In a statement issued on February 27, 2026, NISO said the average available generation stands at about 4.3 gigawatts (GW), largely due to insufficient gas supply that limits the performance of thermal plants — which remain the backbone of Nigeria’s electricity generation.

The operator explained that thermal plants require about 1.63 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) of gas daily to operate at optimal capacity. However, as of February 23, actual gas supply was about 692,000 MMSCF, representing less than 65 per cent of the required volume.

It noted that the shortfall in gas supply has directly constrained power generation and reduced the energy allocated to Distribution Companies (DisCos). When generation drops significantly, NISO said load shedding becomes necessary to protect grid stability and prevent system disturbances.

The system operator assured stakeholders that it is engaging relevant partners to improve gas supply and restore generation capacity. It also expressed regret over the impact of the shortfall on electricity consumers and market participants.

NISO reaffirmed its commitment to optimising available power output as gas supply conditions improve and urged cooperation from all stakeholders to strengthen grid reliability.
