The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has shut down the offices of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) in Abuja, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Niger States following the mass sacking of over 900 workers. The closures include AEDC’s headquarters in Abuja and offices across the affected states.
The action comes after NLC President Joe Ajaero led a picket at AEDC’s headquarters to protest the controversial disengagement, which affected employees who were not of retirement age, contrary to the company’s earlier claims.
Ajaero explained that while AEDC initially stated that only workers nearing retirement would be laid off, the majority of affected employees had served only two to six years, highlighting what he described as “the height of deceit.”
The NLC issued a 48-hour ultimatum to AEDC management to resolve the issue, warning that failure to comply would result in escalated industrial action, potentially crippling electricity supply in Abuja and the three other states.
The union cautioned that continued absence of workers from duty would disrupt operations, emphasizing that power supply could be severely affected if the crisis is not addressed promptly.
