The National Electrical Management Services Agency (NEMSA) and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) have set up a joint committee to enlighten Nigerians on the dangers of building along power lines.

Mr Peter Enwesor, NEMSA Managing Director, made this known in statement signed by Mr Paul Odenyi, Head of NOA Press Unit, and made available to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday.

Enweso  said that the committee’s inauguration came as a result of the Calabar Viewing Centre electrical accident.

He also ordered all transmission and distribution companies to immediately disconnect all buildings erected along high tension power lines in the country.

According to him, this is to ensure that communities are safe from situations that might lead to a repeat of the Calabar accident.

Enwesor said that the essence of the partnership was to take advantage of NOA’s robust platforms to bring the activities of NEMSA to the limelight and knowledge of Nigerians.

He also said the partnership would enlighten and sensitise Nigerians on their roles as consumers and transporters on the quality of electrical products that are safe for installation.

He added that the partnership would afford consumers the opportunity to make inputs toward the development of quality electrical products in the country.

In his remarks, Dr Garba Abari, the NOA Director-General, urged the committee to ensure that people at the grassroots understood NEMSA’s directive.

According to Abari, the work of the committee is to educate and enlighten the people on the dangers of building close to the power infrastructure across the country.

He also urged the committee members to identify other issues and parameters that would be necessary in the implementation of its task.
