Former senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has reignited calls for a rotational presidency, warning that Nigeria’s unity depends heavily on equitable power sharing between the North and South.
Sani emphasized that allowing all regions to have access to the presidency ensures national balance and prevents the domination of one region over the rest. He said that in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious nation like Nigeria, people feel more secure and represented when someone from their region is in power.
He also pointed out that while rotational presidency offers symbolic inclusion, it doesn’t guarantee development. He cited former President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that despite being seen as a savior by the North, he left the region with many of its problems unsolved. According to Sani, the same can be said about other leaders once in office.
On the other hand, the Middle Belt Forum (MBF) President, Bitrus Pogu, agreed with the need for rotational presidency but stressed that the demand stems from Nigeria’s failure to evolve into a united nation. Pogu said that until Nigeria reaches a point where leadership is chosen based on competence and not ethnicity or religion, zoning remains necessary.
According to Pogu, rotational presidency prevents one ethnic group or region from clinging to power at the expense of others. He explained that in today’s Nigeria, most political leaders serve their regions and not the country as a whole, which is why zoning is still essential.
Meanwhile, Shehu Sani dismissed the opposition’s planned coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027, describing it as dead on arrival. He argued that the coalition is being led by people with questionable motives and pasts, not driven by the interest of the country.
Sani particularly criticised former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, saying he cannot be taken seriously after spending nearly 20 years in government without fixing the problems he now complains about. He stated that El-Rufai’s recent attacks on President Tinubu are a reflection of bitterness and personal frustration after his ministerial nomination was rejected.
According to Sani, had El-Rufai been appointed minister, he would likely be among the loudest defenders of the current government. He noted that El-Rufai’s criticisms have become less constructive and more personal, lacking decorum and showing signs of desperation.
Shehu Sani also urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar not to contest the 2027 elections, suggesting instead that he allow a Southerner to complete the power rotation cycle. He said that if Atiku steps aside now, he could earn moral credibility and southern support in future contests.
He cautioned that repeated losses could harm Atiku’s legacy and that a wise politician should know when to step back.
On the worsening security crisis in Benue and other parts of the Middle Belt, Sani said the solution lies in a collective effort by Northern leaders to address the root causes of herder-farmer clashes. He noted that Fulani herders and Tiv farmers have lived together for centuries, and both sides must avoid destructive actions that escalate tensions.
Sani concluded that Nigeria cannot keep solving modern problems with outdated solutions, and urged leaders to prioritize unity, justice, and a shared vision for the future.
