Ogun FRSC records 300 victims in 2021 auto crash
The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, says that more than 300 lives were lost in various road accidents in Ogun state in 2021.
Ahmed Umar, the FRSC Sector Commander in the state, revealed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Sunday and signed by the command’s Public Education Officer, Ms. Florence Okpe.
Mr. Umar explained that 1,200 people were involved in the various traffic accidents with more than 200 vehicles involved.
He noted that speeding violation that was due to human error accounted for more than 77 percent of crashes in the state in 2021.
The FRSC chief revealed that Sienna vehicles, also known as space buses, had a high share of accidents during the year under review.
“The year 2021 was characterized by an increase in traffic accidents in Ogun state.
“In this context, the FRSC in Ogun has initiated plans to reduce traffic accidents.
“The command will deploy radar guns for speed detection and control.
“Furthermore, it will support the enforcement of speed limiter installation on commercial vehicles in general and, by extension, on Sienna vehicles that have been noted to have a high crash rate.
“The application, which is scheduled to go into effect as soon as possible, will be carried out in collaboration with other sister agencies such as the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Police, among others.
“The operation is scheduled to take place throughout the state, especially in the main corridors. Radar guns will be used to check the speed of vehicles and detect erring motorists,” he said.
Mr. Umar advised commercial motorists, especially Sienna owners, to install speed limitation devices in their vehicles and refrain from acts that could pose a threat to themselves and other road users.
