A civil society group, The Osun Masterminds (TOM), has condemned the killing of residents in Akinlalu, Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State, allegedly by members of the Amotekun Corps.
Speaking during the group’s October State of the State Address on Wednesday, Executive Director, Prof. Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, described the incident as a “gruesome attack on defenceless citizens by those meant to protect them.”
“We were saddened by the news of the killings perpetrated by some Amotekun Corps in Akinlalu,” Oyedokun-Alli said. “We are pained not just by the incident itself, but because we had earlier warned the Osun State Government about this possibility.”
The group accused the state government of inaction, alleging that it failed to take immediate steps to address the situation. “Instead of punishing those responsible, the government remained indifferent for days until the Nigeria Police intervened,” TOM stated.
It added that the government’s slow response was particularly disappointing given the recurring communal clashes in the state. “A government faced with several communal crises in less than three years should have acted with a sense of urgency,” the statement read.
TOM, however, commended the Nigeria Police for moving swiftly to restore order and begin investigations. “We sincerely thank the police for rising to the occasion and acting in the interest of law and order,” the group said, urging investigators to ensure transparency and accountability.
The group also called on the Osun State Government to cooperate fully with the police “not just to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book, but to salvage whatever is left of the dignity of the Osun Amotekun Corps.”
Another member of the group, Ayo Ologun, demanded a complete overhaul and leadership change in the Amotekun Corps to prevent similar incidents.
Following the Akinlalu killings on September 30, 2025, the Nigeria Police sealed off Amotekun offices in Okefia, Osogbo, and Ife Central, and invited the corps’ leadership for questioning.
Governor Ademola Adeleke has since directed all parties involved to cooperate with the police investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the killings.
