The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, says that its servers have not been violated but that they operate with the highest levels of international security.

This is contained in a statement issued by NIMC Director General Aliyu Aziz on Tuesday in Abuja.

“We have done everything possible to ensure that the nation’s database is properly secured and protected, especially given the onslaught of cyberattacks on networks around the world,” he said.

He was reacting to a hacker identified as Sam, who on Monday claimed that he successfully breached the NIMC server.

“Over the years, through strenuous efforts, NIMC has built a robust and credible system for the Nigerian identity database.

“The Commission and its infrastructure are certified with the information security management system standard ISO 27001: 2013, which is revalidated annually,” he said.

Mr. Aliyu said that NIMC also ensured maximum security of its systems and databases due to the critical nature of the identity data that the Commission collects, manages and maintains as critical assets for the country.

“The commission assures the public that it will continue to maintain the highest ethical standards in data security on behalf of the Federal Government and will ensure compliance with privacy and data protection standards.

”The commission does not use or store information on the AWS cloud platform.

“We do not store information in any public cloud despite the usefulness of the NIMC mobile app which is available to the public to access their NIN on the go,” he said.

The public may recall that the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy through NIMC launched the Tokenization functions of the NIN verification service.

He said the tokenization was to safeguard people’s personal data and ensure the continued rights and privacy of users.

“In compliance with the mandatory use of the NIN for government services, the Commission also appreciates the concerted efforts of various Federal Government agencies such as the Joint Board of Admissions and Enrollment and the Federal Highway Traffic Safety Corps.

Others include the Nigerian Immigration Services; Pension Commission; the Nigerian Police Force; the Nigerian Correctional Service; Nigerian Customs and many others.

He said that most of these agencies have simplified their services according to the NIN as a valid means of identification, ”Aliyu said.
