Oyo Governor-Elect, Seyi Makinde receives certificate of return

The Oyo State Governor-Elect, Engr. Oluseyi Makinde, on Wednesday in Ibadan promised that his government shall provide better life for the people of Oyo State.

Oyo State governor -elect stated this shortly after receiving Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), at the Banquet Hall of Premier Hotel in Ibadan

The Certificate of Return was presented to Makinde by the INEC National Commissioner in charge of Oyo, Osun and Ekiti, Prince Adedeji Soyebi assisted by the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Oyo State, Barr. Mutiu Agboke, .

ROYAL NEWS reports that Makinde thanked all the people of Oyo State for giving him their mandates, adding that he will work hard to make life better for the people of the state.

He said: “Election has come and gone, it now requires our collective effort and hard working to make life better for the people of Oyo State. I urge all the newly elected members of the Oyo State House of Assembly to cooperate with my administration so that Oyo State can move forward.”

Earlier in his remark, the Resident Electoral Commission in Oyo State, Barr. Mutiu Agboke said that the certificate of return that was issued to the winners serve as the ultimate confirmation of an election victory and the sole requirement before the declared winner can be swear in, either in the executive or legislative arm of government, adding the gathering was backed by Section 75 of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

He pointed out that Forty two (42) governorship candidates contested for the gubernatorial seat while six hundred and fifty nine (659) candidates were nominated by 46 political parties to contest for the 32 seats in the Oyo State House of Assembly, adding that out of the 32 members elect of the State Assembly, 30 of them were fresh members while the remaining two renewed their mandates.

“Oyo State INEC carried messages of voter mobilisation and sensitisation to the media houses, religious, traditional rulers, market leaders, door to door initiatives, and engagement with Civil Society Organisations”.

Agboke further reiterated that” 17 petitions are presently before the Oyo State Election Petition Tribunal, noting that these include four Senatorial and 13 House of Representatives petitions.

“Filling and hearing of election petitions falls into post election activities as aggrieved candidates are given the opportunity of presenting their grievances before the judiciary”.

He however urged all the winners of the election not to downplay the dreams, feelings and expectations of their constituencies and the electorate in general, noting that voters in some cases risked their life’s, sacrificed their comfort, shunned intimidation and harassment to cast their ballot for them.

Prince Adedeji Soyebi in his address advised the newly elected officers in the State to be alive to their responsibilities in providing dividends of democracy to the people of Oyo State. He warned that 2023 is around the corner” if you fail to fulfill your electioneering campaign to the people of this State you will be voted out.
