The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has disclosed that the University is among the three universities in the country that pay full salaries despite the economic downturn, which necessitated about 15 percent shortfall in allocations for overhead cost from the Federal Government.
Ambali, who is also the Chairman, Association of West African Universities (AWAU), disclosed this at the University’s 51st meeting of the Congregation of the University held at the University Main Auditorium, noting that the University made up for the shortfall from its internally generated revenue.
The meeting of the Congregation deliberated on a number of issues affecting the University and staff welfare matters and it was attended by all graduate members of staff, both academic and non-academic.
Pointing out that this has been going on since January 2016, the Vice-Chancellor stressed that his administration does not joke with staff welfare and would do everything to make sure that staff are motivated.
Prof. Ambali lamented that this situation had led to the accumulation of cooperative deductions, a challenge he said is being sorted out.
He said, “The University Council has deliberated on this and advised that we continue doing what we are doing because many people within and outside the University appreciate this effort”, promising that “all the deductions that are yet to be remitted to the cooperative societies will be paid in full as soon as we get the backlog of allocations from government”
Speaking on the state of transportation and security on campus, Prof. Ambali expressed management’s readiness to tackle all the transportation challenges facing the students.
In his remarks, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovations), Prof. G.A Olatunji, said that congregation is a forum to gather ideas, develop and bring improvement to the University.
In his own submission, the University Librarian, Dr. J. O. Omoniyi, disclosed that the University Library now has all necessary materials for students to use the library especially during the examination period.
He revealed that over 2,500 chairs would be provided in the library before the commencement of the First Semester examination, adding that the library’s internet facilities are in good condition to help the students in doing further research.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Prof Y.A. Jimoh, highlighted the challenges facing the Faculty and called for provision of more equipment and studios for the students.
Prof. Jimoh urged the management to task the Faculty to generate electricity for the University instead of spending huge amount of money on electricity that is not regular.
While appreciating the Vice-Chancellor and the management of the University, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr K.I Adam, recalled previous support to the Faculty by the management but appealed for additional Lectures Theatres for the Faculty in order to satisfy the needs of the students.
