Police nabs six illegal clinic, lab operators in Nasarawa

No fewer than six persons have been arrested by the Nasarawa State Police Command for allegedly operating illegal clinics and medical laboratories in the Mararaba area of Karu Local Government Area of the state.

Some medical equipment such as ultrasound machine, blood pressure equipment, surgical materials and theater outfits were confiscated from the clinics and medical laboratories.

The Director of Clinical Services, Nasarawa State Ministry of Health, Dr. Haruna Ekom, confirmed to Northern City News on Sunday that the suspects were apprehended last Friday.

He explained that the arrest was made possible by a combined team of ministry officials and policemen who were on a surveillance inspection to crack down on illegal clinic operators in the state.

The director said a number of unregistered clinics and medical laboratories were shut down, including Access Scan and Medical Services; Maxi Check Laboratory and Ultrasound Scan Centre; Aicon Eye Clinics; Chris and Eve Clinic; as well as Pac Diagnostic Centre in Mararaba and Uke.

According to him, the inspection was a follow-up to an earlier one where officials of the ministry sealed off some private health facilities for operating illegally.

He, however, explained that some of the clinics were caught operating despite being sealed off by the state government, adding that the government would not take kindly to operators of such illegal clinics in the state.

Ekom said, “We have called on those who have not officially registered to come forward and do so, but some of them have stubbornly refused to register their clinics, instead they went ahead and started operating illegally without following due process.”

The proprietor of Access Scan, Dr. Samuel Egbebode, said he had applied for registration, but his application was not considered.
