Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has warned that Nigeria’s democracy faces threats from politicians who attempt to undermine government decisions and policies when they do not favour them. He made the remark while breaking the Ramadan fast with journalists at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna.
The governor described such individuals as “latter-day activists,” accusing them of posing as defenders of democracy despite having supported anti-democratic forces in the past. He urged journalists to remain vigilant and protect the democratic system they once helped to restore.
Sani noted that journalists played a crucial role during Nigeria’s struggle for democracy, with many losing their freedom and lives in the process. He cautioned the media not to allow politicians he described as “conflict merchants” to distort democratic values for personal or political gain.
According to him, these politicians often avoid discussing development issues such as healthcare, education, poverty and infrastructure, choosing instead to exploit ethnic and religious divisions during political campaigns.
The governor also highlighted achievements of his administration, stating that development projects have reached all 23 local government areas of Kaduna State. He added that the government has reduced the number of out-of-school children from about 580,000 to 182,000 and is renovating 15 of the state’s 32 secondary hospitals while planning to build 102 additional schools with support from development partners.
