Railway authority boss over accident
Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir replaced the head of the railway authority on Tuesday following a series of fatal train accidents in one month.
Ashraf Raslan has been dismissed from his post and will serve as an advisor to the minister, according to a ministry statement.
Mostafa Abdel-Latif Abul-Makarem will be the interim head of authority for a year.
The decisions were part of 10 senior Al-Wazir leadership appointments made to the railway authority.
The changes “are in line with the next step which requires a number of qualified (personnel) to continue the overall development of the rail network,” the ministry said in its statement.
Outgoing chef Raslan was appointed in July 2018 under similar circumstances, with his predecessor also being removed from his post following a deadly train derailment.
Since March 26, Egypt has experienced several train accidents that have left around 30 dead and hundreds injured.
In February 2019, an unmanned locomotive crashed into a platform at Cairo station, causing a fire that killed 31 people.
Egypt’s worst rail disaster occurred in 2002, when a passenger train caught fire, killing more than 360 people.
