The New Minimum Wage assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday 18th April, 2019 is worthy of commendation. We commend the National Assembly too for passing the Minimum Wage Bill without any delay.
However, there are more to it. These include the release of the harmonised Salary Table that would reflect the New Wage Act assented by Salaries, Income and Wages Commission and Head of Service of the Federation Implementation Circular to all Ministries, Departments and Parastatals in addition to All Governors and Local Government Chairmen in the Federation. Indeed, the Private Sectors and Small Scale Industries are also affected.
The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria therefore call on all those that have anything to do with the implementation of the New Minimum Wage to act immediately so as not to embarrass or jeopardise the Federal Government over its laudable action on the matter. The FG should also set necessary machinery in motion to tackle possible inflation that may arise over the marginal increase granted.
Finally, with New Minimum Wage decided, the Nation’s Senior Citizens who have retired from Federal, States and LGs have been waiting to know the MINIMUM PENSION which ought to be approved along with the New Minimum Wage. We therefore call of the President to expedite action over this as New Minimum Pension has been due since 2016.
The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, felicitates with christians over the Easter Celebrations. We call on all christians from bottom to the top to combine spirituality with Nation-Building by ensuring that peace, unity and tolerance reflects in their actions and comments.
It is rather unfortunate that the Muslims and Christians who are supposed to unite to fight crimes, corruption and all other social vices got enmeshed in irreligious antagonism.
Prophet Isa (known as Jesus Christ) was a Prophet of God whom muslims believe-in, therefore we should unite to fight the undesirable elements creating tension in our land instead of antagonising each other. The spirit with which we interact in the Inter-Faith Dialogues must continue so as to build a greater Country. Wishing our brother s and sisters many happy returns.
SECURITY OF THE NATION:
The MMWG is worried by incessant killings and maiming of innocent people especially in the Northern parts of this Country. We condemn acts of intimidation and harrassment of innocent citizens through kidnapping abduction and other forms of terrorism.
The fact that the Police is able to apprehend some of these criminals after commiting the acts, shows the bravery of our Security Agencies. However, they should upscale their professional touch by pre-empting the crimes and foiling them before the criminals swing into their nefarious actions.
We join other citizens calling for re-designing of our security architecture in a way that would pre-empt terrorists’ invasion and arresting the criminal act before it is committed. This is far better than ‘fire brigade’ approach we are witnessing as if there is no Government in place.
We however, commend the efforts of the Military so far especially the Army and the Nigerian Airforce for a job well done.
In tackling Security problems, the Federal Government must first tackle the corruption in the Police. As the Police cries out over inadequate personnel, equipment and logistics, what will become of the Police if funds are set aside for them and it is embezzled or diverted?. We have condemned often extortion by policemen on all roads traffic throughout the Country without improvement as well as collection of money for granting bail also by the Police. The new Acting IGP should tackle this, while citizens are ready to tackle the Executive over low-funding of Annual Budget for the Police.
