Restoration of grazing reserves, panacea for peace– Gov. Bello

Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, has said that the reactivation and proper control of grazing reserves across the country is a panacea that will guarantee sustainable peace between farmers and herdsmen.

He stated this on Wednesday when he hosted Rev. Phyllis Sortor, the Director, Schools for Africa, a non-governmental organisation working for peaceful co-existence between the the herdsmen and their host communities in his office in Minna, the state capital.

The governor maintained that the restoration of grazing reserves and making them functional are germane for the search for peace in the face of the recurring hostilities between the pastoralists and farmers. Read also: Afghanistan’s only female governor Impeached

According to the Governor, “for a lasting and sustainable peaceful coexistence of our farmers and the herdsmen in the country, we must bring back to grazing reserves. The reserves must however be subjected to proper control and monitoring in order to avoid abuse. We need sensitise the herdsmen that the land is not for them but a government reserve given to them per time to enable then rear their animals”.

Governor Sani Bello then reaffirmed his administration’s determination to ensure lasting solution to the recurring faceoff between the farmers and the herdsmen in the state by the reactivation of the old Bobi Grazing Reserve, in Mariga Local Government area of the state.

Governor Sani Bello then applauded the efforts of the NGO at ensuring peace among the two opposing sides and counselled it to intensify its sensitaization and education of the herdsmen.

Earlier, the Director, Schools For Africa Rev. Phyllis Sortie, who was accompanied by some Fulani leaders from the defunct Bobi Grazing Reserve called for government intervention in the indiscriminate encroachment of the reserve and lack of functional infrastructures in the area.

She lamented that up to 90 percent of the 30,350 hectares of the grazing reserve is been encroached, adding that the development has forced the herdsmen to move over 1,000 Cows out of the reserve to eastern part of the country. Read also: Lai Mohammed reveals Nnamdi Kanu’s whereabouts

Sortie then assured the governor of her NGO’s resolve to provide additional teachers, medical interventions, promote household train and support teams at the reserve if government expidite action for the reactivation of the grazing reserve.
