US President Donald Trump has landed in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh on his first international trip as president.

Trump, accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, was received by King Salman at Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport.

Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, is the first stop on Trump’s first foreign trip since taking office in January.

The red carpet was rolled out as Trump’s Air Force One landed, with Saudi security guards standing on both sides of it.

Saudi officials have called Trump’s visit “historic,” saying it will strengthen Saudi-US ties strained by former US president Barack Obama’s rapprochement with Iran – an arch-rival of Saudi Arabia.

During his first trip abroad, Trump is scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia, Israel, the Vatican, Belgium and Italy, meeting with NATO leaders in Brussels and the Group of Seven (G7) in Sicily.
