Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has delivered a stern warning to current manager Ruben Amorim, insisting that the Portuguese coach must deliver results immediately after a disappointing start to the season.
United were held to a 1-1 draw at Fulham on Sunday, leaving them without a victory in their opening Premier League fixtures. The result follows a damaging home defeat to Arsenal, which has already placed Amorim under scrutiny just weeks into the campaign.
The pressure is intensified by United’s heavy summer investment, which saw them spend over £200 million to strengthen their squad. Highly rated striker Benjamin Šeško arrived alongside Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, signings that were expected to transform the team’s attacking fortunes after last season’s underwhelming 15th-place finish.
Speaking on his BBC podcast, Rooney admitted he understands the weight of expectation at Old Trafford and stressed that Amorim cannot afford excuses.
“There’s no excuses now for the manager this season. He’s got to start getting results and getting them quickly,” Rooney said.
“Once you start getting into October or November, if results don’t change drastically, that’s when the pressure comes.”
Amorim, who took charge in the summer with a reputation for his tactical acumen at Sporting Lisbon, is already under growing pressure from fans and pundits. The draw at Craven Cottage has only added to concerns that the new-look squad is struggling to click.
With difficult fixtures ahead, Rooney’s words serve as a reminder that time is rarely a luxury afforded to Manchester United managers when results fall short of expectations.
