Rotary club empowers youths, widows

The Rotary Club of Naraguta, Jos has commenced a skills acquisition programme aimed at making widows and unemployed youths in Plateau self-reliant.

Among skills in the programme are soap and beads making, hair dressing, fashion design, welding and auto mechanic.

According to Ms Theresa Eyetan, President of the Club, graduates of the scheme would be assisted to start up small scale outfits to fend for their families and become assets to the society.

Eyetan, who spoke on the programme at her formal investiture as the 5th female President of the club on Saturday in Jos, said that it was part of activities lined up to mark the Rotary year which began on July 1, 2017.

She said that other activities included massive support for efforts to eradicate polio and the distribution of birth kits.

The official said that the club would also distribute mosquito nets, donate furniture and educational materials to public schools, and organise a youth seminar on conflict prevention and resolution.

The President said that the projects were in line with Rotary Club’s theme for 2017 which is ‘Making A Difference’.

Earlier in his remarks, Mr Lucky Momoh, former Assistant Governor of Rotary Club District 9125, said that Rotary was an all-inclusive organisation always ready to offer service to humanity.

Momoh, who chaired Eyetan’s installation committee, expressed the society’s readiness to support efforts toward a better world with opportunities for all.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that eight wheel chairs were distributed to four teenagers and four adults at the occasion.

NAN also reports that the club had earlier organised a dental outreach that benefited 300 children in public primary schools in Jos. (NAN)
