The Rotary Club of Abuja, Gwarimpa has promised to assist the public schools in Gwarinpa to check erosion in its premises through tree planting.
Emmanuel Adie, the President of the club said this when he inaugurated its tree planting project at the schools on Thursday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the schools are Local Education Authority Primary School, Junior Secondary School, and Junior Secondary School.
He said the club decided to embark on the project after a careful survey and needs assessment of the schools.
“During the assessment, we discovered that the effect of erosion at these schools was massive.
“This does not only constitute health hazard for the students as they stand the risk of injuries from their playgrounds, but even collapse of their buildings.
“In the light of floods presently ravaging the country, the club deemed it fit to use the project as part of our corporate social responsibility to safeguard our children and our environment.”
Adie said that the club was on a salvage mission to ensure the schools had conducive learning environment as was obtainable in private schools.
“We have provided sustainable clean water to the schools as well as provided the schools with toilet facilities, you can imagine what the schools were going through without toilet facilities and access to clean water,” he said.
In his remarks, Mbanefo Ositadinma, the District Governor of Rotary International District 9125 advised members to embark on life changing projects that would touch on Rotary’ six areas of focus.
The areas include Disease prevention and control, Basic education and literacy, Maternal and Childcare, water and sanitation, Economic and Community development and Peace and conflict resolution.
NAN reports that Rotary international club recently added a seventh focus area, sustainable environmental practices.
In her response, the Head Teacher of one of the schools, Hajia Hafsat Isah commended the club for coming to their rescue.
“I thank you and your members for what you have been doing for us and promise to maintain the infrastructure you have provided for us. (NAN)
